What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the largest natural health care profession in the world. Developed over 100 years ago, this conservative, drug-free, surgery-free approach to optimal health is based on the premise that the relationship between the body's structure and function is a significant factor in your health.

Chiropractic care focuses primarily on the the spine and the integrity of the nervous system. Maintaining good structure allows the functions of the body to be in balance and allows your natural healing ability to flourish.

A Column of Strength...

Your spine is designed to support your weight, allow your body a considerable range of movement & flexibility while also protecting your spinal cord, the direct link between your brain and the rest of your body.  However, altered spinal function may interfere with nerve function in your body, causing not only back pain, but possibly other types of health problems. How does your spine affect nerve function?

NS_spine.jpgThe nervous system relies on the information it senses from the body and the outside world to maintain its ability to govern the body and coordinate its parts. The "feeling" of movement in the spine is feedback that helps the nervous system evaluate how well it coordinates spinal muscles and where it needs to make changes learning to adapt and develop motor skills. Besides increased mechanical wear and tear, poor movement habits, poor posture, injuries and disease in the spine produce sensory experiences that are disruptive to the nervous system's ability to learn and adapt in a positive manner, especially in prolonged instances involving chronic pain. Pain, although a warning sign, it can also be interfering noise. With coordinated fluid movement and stable function in the spine - the goal of chiropractic - there is a sensory experience that enables the spine to continue to perform well and remain strong, reducing the risk of pain and dysfunction. Essentially, the idea is move well and stay well.

Keep in mind that no specific treatment has all of the answers to all of the health problems people face. However, chiropractic has been successful in many cases where traditional treatments have failed in the treatment of the spine and its ailments. Given that not all people are created equal, if your health problem does not respond to chiropractic care, your doctor of chiropractic will refer you to the proper health care specialist.

What to Expect From Your Chiropractor

Chiropractors are primary contact doctors and therefore no referral is required. To ensure that your condition is a chiropractic one and rule out contraindications/risks to treatment, your initial consultation will include, a thorough health history, physical examination, and x-rays, if required. Following a review of findings in which your condition and chiropractic’s role is thoroughly explained to you, a treatment protocol will be assigned to your case based on what the latest research and clinical trails have shown to best relieve your symptoms, eliminate irritation to nervous system function and prevent reoccurrences, providing the groundwork to optimize your future spinal health.
